Acne, commonly known as pimples, is familiar to all. It’s a common condition which affects the pubertal age group. Changes in dietary habits / sedentary lifestyle, hormonal issues has all contributed in causing acne across all age groups.

Types of Acne

Grade 1: Whiteheads, Blackheads

Grade 2: along with comedones, papules

Grade 3: papules & modules pustules

Grade 4: Nodules, Cyste, Abscess Truncal Acne (Body Acne)

 

What causes Acne?

  1. Genetic / familial
  2. Hormonal imbalance
  • PCOS / Insulin Resistance
  • Raised male hormones
  1. Comedogenic products / cosmetics
  2. Drugs: contraceptive pills, steroids, anabolic steroids
  3. Diet: lots of sugar, dairy, white flour
  4. Stress
  5. Mask induced

 

When to consult a dermatologist?

  • If pimples continue to break out inspite of all the “measures”
  • If painful and red pimples
  • If pustules / cysts / modules

 

What to do if you’ve Acne?

  1. An oil control face wash twice a day
  2. Water based moisturizer
  3. Non comedogenic gel based sunscreens
  4. Treat dandruff
  5. Increased intake of citrus fruits and stuff rich in zinc
  6. Drink lots of water daily
  7. Consult a dermatologist

 

What not to do in Acne?

  1. Avoid squeezing / pop the pimples – this may lead to scarry hyperpigmentation
  2. Avoid too much thick / oily cosmeceuticals
  3. Reduce chocolates, sugar, dairy products
  4. Do not apply toothpaste, lemon, lime, etc
